Kings Landing Historical Settlement

Wednesday August 12 9:30am-5:30pm

A one-of-a-kind experience! Spend a day immersed in 19th century activities at Kings Landing Historical Settlement, participating in hands-on workshops and living in the past! Costumed tour guides will greet the guests as they arrive at Kings Landing and provide a guided tour of the village. After the tour, guests will gather at the turn of the century Riverside Church for an old-fashioned sing-along. After a delicious lunch at the King's Head Inn, guests will choose from one of the following concurrent workshop sessions, each designed for a group of 4 -10 people:
  • Open Hearth Baking: How do you bake a cake when the oven doesn't have a thermostat? Guests will assist in preparing old-fashioned gingerbread with the help of costumed staff and traditional implements.
  • Sheep to Shawl: Explore the stages of processing wool - washing, carding, spinning and weaving from the fleece to the shawl, using artifact and reproduction tools.
  • Herbal Medicines: Learn about the medicinal needs of a 19th century community and how those needs were met with natural remedies. Stroll the lanes and gardens with a costumed herbalist, and take away samples of remedies you have made yourself.
  • Blacksmith/Cooper: Try your hand at the bellows and hammer a red-hot piece of iron into a nail to take home. Visit the cooper shop and contribute your skill to the creation of a solid wooden bucket.
  • Millers: Haul a log out of the pond; size it with the crosscut saw and help move it through the water-powered vertical saw. Stroll next door and 50 years into the future to help the Gristmill operator in bagging buckwheat, and discover how the turbine-driven technology works.
  • Horse Power: Man and beast work side-by-side to run an 1866 horse-powered drag saw to chunk wood for the fireplace. Load the horse-drawn cart and deliver wood to the historic homes for cooking, laundry and more.
  • After working up an appetite, guests will be escorted to a 19th century home to enjoy a Traditional Afternoon Tea. Three homes will welcome participants to enjoy a cup of tea and the desserts made by the guests over the open fire. Costumed staff will facilitate conversation about proper etiquette in the 19th century, as you enjoy a rare opportunity to sit in a parlour filled with artifact furniture and artwork.
