Research Tour
Wednesday August 12, 2009
Wednesday's Agriculture Research Tour will take place within the city of Fredericton. The tour commences at the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture and Aquaculture's Plant Propagation Centre (PPC), which was established in 1983. The in-vitro tissue culture lab supplies propagules in bulk to New Brunswick seed potato producers and a limited quantity per variety to operations both nationally and internationally. The PPC is home to the Canadian Potato Variety Repository.
The tour then proceeds to the Potato Research Centre, which is one of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) national research network of 19 research centres. Established in 1912, the Centre is located on 182 ha on the south bank of the St. John River. Potato research is the Centre's main focus with additional components in soils and environment. AAFC Research Scientists will be your tour guides for this stage of the Research Tour.
The tour will conclude with a visit to the Agricultural Certification Services Inc. (ACS) laboratory, accredited by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to perform regulatory testing for potatoes. ACS is owned and operated by potato growers of New Brunswick as a not-for-profit laboratory and managed by Potatoes NB. The ACS lab was the first to attain accreditation from the CFIA in Canada in 1996. The ACS lab routinely carries out research projects, in cooperation with local researchers, for the benefit of the New Brunswick potato industry.
Cost: $30 per person, includes transportation, snacks and lunch.
